WHAT HAPPENED?
Tottenham will not allow themselves to be bullied by Atletico Madrid into selling star centre-back Romero, according to The Telegraph. The Argentina international has emerged as one of Spurs' most important players and was crucial in the latter stages of the glorious Europa League campaign, delivering a player of the match performance in the final against Manchester United.
AFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE
Romero has previously revealed he wants to play in Spain's La Liga and has taken swipes at the Tottenham ownership over their decision to sack previous manager Ange Postecoglou, who has since been replaced by Thomas Frank. However, with two years remaining on his current contract, the 27-year-old could be forced to remain in north London if Atletico fail to stump up the cash to meet Spurs' valuation.
DID YOU KNOW?
Romero had a campaign disrupted by injury during 2024-25, making a total of 26 appearances in all competitions. Micky van Ven and Radu Dragusin's fitness issues meant Tottenham often had to field the likes of Ben Davies and Archie Gray in central defence on their way to finishing 17th in the Premier League.

Tottenham have made their January loan deals for Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel permanent moves so far this summer and have also lined up a transfer for Japanese defender Kota Takai.
