WHAT HAPPENED?
Maddison's stunning brace led Spurs to a commanding first-half lead, while goals from Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson sealed the result, handing City their most significant home league loss under Guardiola. The attacking midfielder turned 28 on Saturday and to beat the reigning champions in such fashion made it a day to savour.
AFPWHAT MADDISON SAID
After the match, Maddison told BBC Sport: "That's a birthday I’ll look back on quite fondly. To come here to the champions and perform like that and get the result. You have to cherish these ones, they don’t come around often. "I thought we were brilliant. It was everything we wanted to show of a top Spurs team. We were clinical, we had cutting edge, we pressed at times. We weathered the storm, had grit and determination and scored four brilliant goals."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
For City, the defeat deepened an already troubling slump. They have now lost five consecutive matches across all competitions, an unprecedented run for a team of their calibre under Guardiola. Moreover, according to Opta, they are the first reigning top-flight champions to endure such a losing streak since Chelsea in March 1956.
GettyWHAT NEXT FOR TOTTENHAM & MANCHESTER CITY?
Tottenham will look to build on this momentum when they host AS Roma in the Europa League next Thursday. Meanwhile, City face a crucial Champions League clash against Feyenoord on Tuesday before heading to Anfield to take on league leaders Liverpool next weekend.
