  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Fabrizio Romano has explained to GiveMeSport that Tottenham will be given the opportunity to match any bid that Bayern Munich receive for Kane, putting the decision into the player's hands should he decide to move clubs.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rejoining Spurs in the event of departing Bayern would be the emotional choice for Kane, having opted to leave his boyhood club in 2023 in pursuit of trophies. Romano explained that a release clause only active last month made the 31-year-old available for a fixed €80 million (£67m/$83m) during the January transfer window. There will be no such clause in the summer, but another in January 2026 will set the price even lower, although Kane will be halfway to his 33rd birthday by then and into the final 18 months of Bayern contract.

  • WHAT FABRIZIO ROMANO SAID

"There's one more clause for next year, which is only available in January 2026 and worth €65m," Romano told GiveMeSport. "It won't be possible to proceed with the clause in summer 2026, but that clause could set the price in case some club decides to enter the race after the USA World Cup. It's one to watch, for sure. Don't forget about Tottenham, as they have matching rights for Harry Kane. At any moment, if Bayern receive a bid, Spurs will be informed and can match the proposal to bring Kane back – if they want to."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Manchester United are at least not expected to be in for Kane. Romano added that, while co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is believed to be a fan of the forward, he doesn't fit with the club's new strategy of targeting younger players and lowering wages.

    WHAT NEXT FOR HARRY KANE?

Even if a club does show interest in the 2026 release clause, Kane doesn't look likely to leave Bayern any time soon, which means that focus remains on what he can do on the pitch. It's 28 goals and counting already this season, but quenching the thirst for silverware is the real priority. Kane's arrival at Bayern last season remarkably coincided with the club losing their stranglehold on the Bundesliga and enduring a first trophy-less campaign since 2011-12. In 2024-25, they comfortably lead the title race, remain active in the Champions League and have the new Club World Cup to come.
