    WHAT HAPPENED?

PSV announced on Sunday that the U.S. international would be out for an 'extended time' on social media. However, on Monday, The Athletic reported that the 24-year-old would not only miss Copa America, but the remainder of the 2024 calendar year.

  • WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

U.S. fan @UnderdogSP argues that Dest's injury may be an opening for Tim Weah to find himself as a footballer: "Tim Weah at RB is probably a better position for him long term. Weah doesn’t exactly have a full bag of attacking/scoring skills. Maybe Dest’s injury helps Weah figure out his best position."

@brbrouwerr says that Dest's injury may be the opening Joe Scally needed to find confidence amid a string of starts for the USMNT: "Dest’s injury going into a crucial summer for us in Copa America…but a great opportunity for Scallywag to get a real run in with the @USMNT and I’m ready for everyone to jump on the pirate ship I’m on."

Podcaster @concacafedgar pitched the idea of calling up a multi-national from Serie A with eligibility for Germany, Croatia and the USA:

  • WHAT THE PUNDITS ARE SAYING

Former U.S. international Herculez gomez weighed in, saying: "Forget about Copa America. This jeopardizes his permanent transfer out of Barca to PSV."

CBS Soccer pundit and ex-USMNT star Charlie Davies had his say on who should replace Dest in the starting XI this Summer: "Timothy Weah would be the player i'd like to see at the right-back spot."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Dest being ruled out for the remainder of the calendar year puts a lot of things up in the air. First being, his potential permanent transfer from Barcelona to the Dutch club, and second, his role with the USMNT.

If the 24-year-old can still manage to secure a move to PSV this summer, it's a win-win for all parties involved. He's had an incredible campaign or them, and rewarding him with a permanent move would be the right thing to do.

For the U.S. - it's now next man up. Whether that's Tim Weah, Joe Scally, George Bello or a potential change in formation this summer to accommodate his absence, change will happen in the XI.

The defender will continue to be evaluated over the coming days before determining the best practice going forward for recovery.

The USMNT, meanwhile, will be gearing up for a pair of June international friendlies against Brazil and Colombia ahead of the marquee summer tournament.
