Thiago Alcantara set for Liverpool exit as Girona plot summer move ahead of debut season in Champions League

<p>Thiago joined Jurgen Klopp's side in the summer of 2020, in a highly-anticipated move from Bayern Munich. The midfielder was one of the best in the world when he joined the Reds, however, his stint with the club failed to live up to the hype due to his struggles with multiple injuries. The 33-year-old has now announced that he will not be extending his contract with the 19-time Premier League winners, and will move on.</p>

<p>The Liverpool manager praised the midfielder after the announcement of his departure and said: "Thiago, a world-class player. In a different world, I would love to see the career without injuries. He can do things with a football that I didn't think was possible."</p>

<p>Relevo have reported that Girona, who surprised the footballing world this season by piling the pressure on Real Madrid and Barcelona in the title race in Spain, are looking to sign the Spaniard this summer and have already contacted his entourage to examine the potential of the move. <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-in/lists/european-minnows-qualify-revamped-champions-league-2024-25/bltc1ae0fa2023206b5" target="_blank">The Catalan side have confirmed their presence in next season's Champions League group stage</a> and are considering adding the midfielder ahead of their bow in Europe's premier club competition.</p>

<p>Despite Girona's interest in Thiago, there is one major hurdle that Girona will need to contend with, that being the Spaniard's substantial wages. According to the report, Thiago earned close to €10 million (£8.5m)/$10.8m) per season with the Reds, and if he is to make the move to Catalonia, he will have to undertake a major pay cut as Girona are unlikely to be able to meet his current salary.</p>
