'It's the same knee' - Pep Guardiola admits injury concern over Rodri amid complicated return from torn ACL

Rodri was absent from Manchester City’s matchday squad as they thrashed Burnley 5-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. Guardiola later revealed the midfielder complained of discomfort in training and ruled himself out before kick-off. The issue stems from the same knee that kept him sidelined for eight months last season, sparking fresh concerns over his recovery.

Speaking to the media, Guardiola said: "In training, Rodri said, ‘I’m not able to play. I have a lot of pain in my knee, I cannot play.’ And I said: ‘You cannot play? You don’t play. So another one is going to play.’ It’s the same knee he had injured."

The City boss made it clear he would not risk aggravating the problem, adding: "When a player tells me he cannot play, I have to listen. The most important thing is his health. We hope it’s nothing serious, but it’s something we have to check carefully."

Rodri’s absence comes as a major setback for Manchester City, who are still building rhythm after a slow start to the season. The midfielder has struggled for consistency since returning from a torn ACL, missing several games already due to lingering discomfort. With the team already depleted by injuries, Guardiola’s cautious approach may be necessary to avoid a long-term setback.

City face Monaco next in the Champions League, but Rodri is unlikely to feature unless fully cleared by medical staff. Guardiola will have to reshuffle his midfield options, possibly turning to Nico Gonzalez or Rico Lewis in a deeper role. The club will hope the issue proves minor, with Rodri’s fitness key to sustaining their domestic and European ambitions.
