Ruben Amorim's first signing? Man Utd could exercise buy-back clause on forgotten star who never played for the club as Liverpool consider €50m move

The 21-year-old swapped United for Benfica this summer for a fee worth up to £7.5 million ($9.8m) but inserted a £16m ($20.9m) buy-back clause for the left-back. Now, according to Correio da Manha, Liverpool's interest in recruiting the Benfica left-back 'is real' and new United boss Ruben Amorim wants to bring him back to Old Trafford in January.

The report adds that while United have that bargain deal available to them, other suitors such as Liverpool will have to pay a lot more. Indeed, the Benfica defender reportedly has a €50m (£41.5m) release clause in his contract. Carreras never made a first-team appearance for United and now he is a man in demand.

The report adds that Carreras' style of play will fit 'perfectly' with the former Sporting CP boss' style of play. Now it remains to be seen if Liverpool's reported interest in the youngster will force United's hand.

While it remains to be seen if teams will try to sign Carreras in January, the young defender will next feature for Benfica - where he is playing regularly - in the fourth round of the Taca de Portugal against Estrela Amadora on November 23.
