Revealed: When Mauricio Pochettino should take charge of the USMNT for the first time as Chelsea severance is resolved

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    Pochettino is primed to take over of the United States men's national team but has not yet been officially unveiled as their new manager. Ahead of that being confirmed, the former Chelsea boss' first game in charge of the US could be against Canada in a friendly on September 7, reports The Athletic. They report he is yet to be paid the money he is owed after one season in charge at the Blues - before leaving Stamford Bridge earlier this summer.

    The report adds negotiations between U.S. Soccer, Pochettino and Chelsea are 'ongoing and remain positive', with the Argentine 'extremely excited' about taking up the role. Incidentally, The Athletic states that if he isn't confirmed as their new manager in time for the Canada game, he will be 'present and heavily involved' with the US for their upcoming games.

    Pochettino has reportedly reached an agreement with the United States Soccer Federation but has not yet been sworn in as Gregg Berhalter's successor. The former Tottenham manager is reportedly still being paid by Chelsea and that will continue until he finds a new job.

    After facing Canada on September 7, Pochettino could be in charge for a friendly against New Zealand on September 11. It remains to be seen if he will be confirmed by the USMNT and if his severance deal with Chelsea will be resolved.
