The England international has made a stunning impact at Santiago Bernabeu on the back of his summer transfer from Borussia Dortmund, with 16 goals recorded through 19 appearances. WHAT BELLINGHAM SAID

Bellingham has told Marca of following in illustrious footsteps: “Zidane is one of the best midfielders in history. I hope to preserve the legacy of his number and his boots.” He added on the boots that he now fills – which have previously been donned by some legendary figures: “I hope there are many great moments ahead, continue with the legacy of these boots, of this brand, and try to inspire the next generation that comes after me. Before it was done by Zidane, Beckham or Gerrard, and now it is my responsibility and pride and I hope to enjoy it.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bellingham’s rise to prominence has seen him land the prestigious Kopa Trophy and Golden Boy award in 2023, with the 20-year-old delighted to see his achievements recognised after previously missing out on individual honours. He added: “Winning trophies like the Golden Boy has come naturally, I had been second twice and the truth is that I didn't like it. You take it personally when you don't win. For me, it was about keeping pushing, keeping trying, and in the end I got it.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR BELLINGHAM?

A shoulder problem has threatened to hinder Bellingham’s efforts in 2023-24, but he has been happy to play through any pain as he helps to push Real Madrid into La Liga title contention and through to the last 16 of the Champions League.
