Real Madrid player ratings vs Bayern Munich: Vinicius Jr loves the Champions League! Brazilian brilliant on big occasion yet again as Jude Bellingham bottled up in Bavaria

When Jude Bellingham went quiet, Vinicius Jr shone brightly. The Real Madrid winger scored twice to make up for a poor showing from his fellow forward, helping Los Blancos fight back to a 2-2 Champions League first-leg draw with Bayern Munich.

Madrid weren't really in the game when they took the lead midway through the first half, as Toni Kroos made the goal, his defence-splitting pass falling to the feet of Vinicius, who finished first time past a sprawling Manuel Neuer. Kroos almost added a second after half-time, too, but Neuer kept his fine curling effort.

But Bayern fought back, and Leroy Sane equalised, lashing home at the near post, before Harry Kane gave them a lead, converting from the penalty spot after Jamal Musiala was tripped in the box.

Vinicius had an answer, though, scoring a penalty of his own after his neat footwork led to Kim Min-jae bringing down Rodrygo. Madrid were far from their electric best, but once again found a way in the Champions League, and they will feel that everything is poised perfectly for a second-leg result.

GOAL rates Real Madrid's players from the Allianz Arena...

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Andriy Lunin (5/10):

Perhaps beaten too easily at the near post for the opener. Sent the wrong way for the penalty.

    Lucas Vazquez (4/10):

Threw in a silly tackle to give away the Bayern penalty. Didn't deal with Musiala at all.

    Antonio Rudiger (6/10):

Didn't have loads to do defensively, but kept the ball moving when Madrid had it.

    Nacho (5/10):

Favoured over Tchouameni at centre-back, and never looked secure.

    Ferland Mendy (6/10):

Struggled against the pace and trickery of Sane early on, but locked things down later.

    Midfield

    Aurelien Tchouameni (6/10):

Had a hard time picking up the roaming Kane. Offered some interesting probing passes, but Madrid could have done with him asserting himself more readily.

    Federico Valverde (6/10):

Ate up ground, and was up for the midfield fight. Played a few nice passes, too.

    Toni Kroos (8/10):

Played an excellent threaded pass to set up Vinicius' goal. Pinged it around throughout. Confusing to see him subbed off.

    Jude Bellingham (5/10):

On the ball a lot, but was mostly shepherded out of dangerous areas by a well-organised Bayern defence. Far from his best game.

    Attack

    Vinicius Jr (9/10):

Took his goal well, and created chaos on the left. Quick feet and superb pass led to the penalty, which he then converted with a cool stroke down the middle. Excellent.

    Rodrygo (5/10):

Went on a few winding runs, but didn't get in goalscoring positions too often. Not his best.

  • Carlo Ancelotti Real Madrid 2023-24Getty Images

    Subs & Manager

    Eduardo Camavinga (5/10):

Barely involved in his 25 minutes.

    Brahim Diaz (6/10):

Ran at Bayern defenders immediately. Caused problems after coming on.

    Luka Modric (6/10):

Added some composure to the midfield.

    Joselu (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

    Carlo Ancelotti (6/10):

Made some interesting calls, including leaving Camavinga out. His team were poor for long stretches, but turned it on when mattered, and somehow snagged a 2-2.
