Anthony Gordon has been ruled out of the Carabao Cup due to suspension following his red card in Newcastle's FA Cup clash against Brighton on Sunday.

    The Newcastle winger lashed out with a two-handed shove to the head of Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke as they raced for the ball, and was shown a straight red card.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    As Gordon was sent off for violent conduct, he will serve a three-match ban, ruling him out of next weekend's Premier League visit to West Ham and then the Carabao Cup final clash against Liverpool on March 16. He will also miss his team's home match against Brentford.

    The 24-year-old's absence will come as a huge loss for Eddie Howe's team. Gordon has scored nine goals and set up a further six in 33 appearances in all competitions this season.

    WHAT NEXT FOR NEWCASTLE?

    Newcastle may opt to appeal against the red card in an attempt to have it overturned. For now, however, the England international will not feature against Arne Slot's team.
