  • WHAT HAPPENED?

After suffering knee ligament damage in October 2023, former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar spent 12 months out of action. Following a long road to recovery, the 32-year-old returned to the field in an AFC Champions League clash with Al Ain.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

He graced that competition again when stepping off the bench against Esteghlal. Neymar was introduced early in the second half, but failed to see the game out as he limped from the pitch after suffering discomfort in his right leg.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

A full-blooded challenge left Neymar nursing a knock, with the South American posting on social media afterwards as he waits on further medical checks: “I hope it's nothing serious. It's normal for this to happen after a year. The doctors had already warned me. That's why I have to be careful and play more minutes.”

    WHAT JORGE JESUS SAID

Al-Hilal boss Jesus told reporters when asked how serious Neymar’s injury is and whether it could lead to another lengthy spell on the treatment table: “He returned from an injury that is not easy. He plays in a position that makes him very vulnerable to contact. I believe his injury is muscular, not in the knee. He should be out for at least two weeks.”

  • WHAT NEXT FOR NEYMAR?

If that assessment is correct, then Neymar should be ready for the next match that he is eligible for. Having been left out of Al-Hilal’s Saudi Pro League squad, he could face Al-Sadd in the AFC Champions League on November 26, with Jesus adding: “I didn't register him in the league because I knew it could happen again. It's not a simple injury.”
