  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Last week, United announced Amorim will replace Erik ten Hag following his departure from the club after a poor start to the season. The Red Devils had only won four matches from a total of 14 clashes in all competitions before the Dutchman's sacking. As such, the expectations on Amorim are already sky high as United look to return to the top end of the Premier League within a few years.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United's top brass and fans alike will likely be tuning into Sporting's next clash, which comes in the Champions League against the Red Devils' bitter rivals City. Amorim has now revealed that he knows that United fans may just brand him the second coming of legendary manager Ferguson if Sporting manage to take a result from the clash against Pep Guardiola's Premier League champions.

    WHAT AMORIM SAID

Speaking to the media, Amorim said: "I don’t think about that [increasing United fans' expectations]. My focus is on winning the match for Sporting. The conclusions are not important for me because they could be erroneous. If we win tomorrow they will think the new Alex Ferguson has arrived. That will be very difficult to live up to. It could increase expectations. I don’t think about that."

  • WHAT NEXT FOR AMORIM?

The Portuguese coach is set to take charge of United starting on November 11 after the commencement of the international break. Prior to that Amorim will take part in his last two Sporting matches as head coach against City on Tuesday and Braga on Sunday.
