Getty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED?
Signed from Paris Saint-Germain for £86 million (€102m/$106.9m) in 2023, Neymar’s contract was mutually terminated after making just seven appearances following an injury-marred spell in Riyadh. The decision to part ways with Neymar clears both financial resources and squad space for Al-Hilal to pursue another marquee signing. Salah, who has been a long-standing target of the Saudi Pro League, has emerged as the frontrunner to fill that void, according to The Telegraph.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Salah is currently in the final year of his contract at Anfield. While there is no possibility of him leaving before the end of the ongoing season, reports suggest that Al-Hilal are positioning themselves to sign the Egyptian on a free transfer once his Liverpool deal expires. The 32-year-old forward, whose current contract earns him around £20m annually, has indicated this season could be his last on Merseyside.
The FIFA Council recently approved a proposal for an 'exceptional; transfer window from June 1 to June 10, just ahead of the usual summer window opening on June 12. This adjustment, designed to address registration discrepancies among participating teams in the FIFA Club World Cup, could pave the way for Al-Hilal to secure Salah’s signature.
DID YOU KNOW?
As four-time Asian champions and Saudi Arabia’s only representative in the FIFA Club World Cup, Al-Hilal are determined to field a competitive squad. They have been drawn into the same group as European champions Real Madrid, further heightening the stakes. The club already boasts a roster featuring former Premier League players, including Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ruben Neves, and Joao Cancelo. Adding Salah to their ranks would not only strengthen their chances in the tournament but also solidify their reputation on the global stage.

Salah, who recently surpassed Thierry Henry to become the seventh-highest scorer in Premier League history with 176 goals, remains a pivotal figure for Liverpool. He has been in sensational form this season with 40 goal contributions in just 32 appearances.
