Morata, Courtois & players who played for Real & Atletico Madrid

Things never worked out for Alvaro Morata as a youth player for Atletico. He moved to the Real Madrid academy before breaking through to the first-team in 2010.

His time at the Bernabeu was fairly successful, and he spent two seasons at Juventus before moving back to Real Madrid in 2016. A club-record £60 million move to Chelsea started strongly but came to a disappointing end as he failed to re-capture his form from the beginning of his career.

After 12 years away, Morata returned to Atletico in 2019 on loan from Chelsea – completing a career full-circle.

A three-year loan spell at Atletico from Chelsea from 2011-14 saw Thibaut Courtois lift the Liga title and the Europa League.

His final game for the club before returning to the Blues was the 2014 Champions League final against city rivals Real Madrid, which Atletico lost in extra time. He had a fruitful four-year career back at Chelsea where he emerged as one of the finest shot-stoppers in England and won the Premier League twice. The Belgium international made the move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2018, replacing Keylor Navas as the club's first-choice goalkeeper.

The right-back only made the bench for two of Real Madrid's Champions League games between 2004-06 after graduating from the reserve side, never solidifying himself as a starter.

After moving to their city rivals in 2011 from Osasuna, however, he emerged as a permanent defensive stable for Atletico over the years. With Atletico, he has made 230 La Liga appearances and won the league, the Copa del Rey and two Europa League titles. He then appeared in two Champions League finals – only to be denied victory by his former side Real Madrid.

It's a story of the one who got away after Atletico Madrid released future Real Madrid legend and icon Raul from their youth team. Raul switched to the rivals' academy in 1992 and became the youngest player to put on the Real Madrid shirt at 17 years and 124 days.

In a twist of fate, Raul ended up scoring his first goal in his second senior game on a home debut against Atletico. He went on to score a club-record 323 goals for Los Blancos, winning three Champions Leagues and six La Liga titles and has now returned to the Bernabeu as a youth coach.

Having been a breakout talent with River Plate, the Argentine moved to Atletico Madrid in 1999 where he impressed with his 13 goals in 67 appearances. Vicente del Bosque then signed him for rivals Real Madrid after just one campaign, where he won La Liga and the Champions League in his first season at the Bernabeu.

After stints at Inter, San Lorenzo and Penarol to see out his playing career, he returned to Real Madrid first as a youth and reserve coach. He is now manager of the first-team after taking over from Julen Lopetegui, who was dismissed in October 2018.

Schuster's move from Barcelona to Real Madrid 1988 was hugely controversial, and he stirred the pot even further after leaving the Bernabeu for Atletico immediately afterwards. He enjoyed success at both sides, lifting La Liga twice and the Copa del Rey at Real Madrid and then finishing above Los Blancos in 1992 in La Liga (though were runners-up to champions Barcelona).

He gained status as an Atletico icon when he scored the opening goal in the 1992 Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid, though caused tension once again when he returned to the Bernabeu as manager in 2007 for one season.

After breaking through the ranks at Mexico side UNAM Pumas, Sanchez moved to Atletico in 1981 and scored 54 goals in 111 domestic games for the Spanish side. His 19 goals in the 1984-85 season earned him the honour of La Liga top-scorer and awarded him a move to rivals Real Madrid after four seasons at the Calderon.

With Real Madrid, the Mexico striker was top-scorer of La Liga for the next four seasons as he helped the Spanish giants to five straight top-flight titles from 1986 to 1990. He was on the scoresheet during the victorious 1986 UEFA Cup Final and won the European Golden Boot in 1990 to equal Telmo Zarra's then-record 38 goals in a single La Liga season.

Reyes never quite fully made the grade at Arsenal and spent the 2006-07 season on loan at Real Madrid, where he won La Liga in his first season. 

Following his time with Los Blancos, he immediately moved to Atletico where he spent four seasons with the city rivals. He won the Europa League twice as well as the UEFA Super Cup before leaving the Calderon for spells at Sevilla and Espanyol.

Jurado's Real Madrid career never took off after he came up through the youth and reserve teams, making just three senior appearances in one season. He spent his youth career alongside Javi Garcia and was touted as an important player for Real Madrid Castilla, but found difficulty securing first-team opportunities. 

He moved to Atletico Madrid immediately from Real in 2006 for a fee of €3m where he spent four seasons, scoring 10 Liga goals in 88 appearances.
