  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Against the run of play, the Red Devils scored twice in the opening 20 minutes through Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund; with Porto keeper Diogo Costa culpable for both the goals. However, even after going down by two goals, the hosts looked more threatening and within seven minutes they pulled one back, thanks to a strike from Pepe. They kept piling the pressure on United's brittle defence and were rewarded for their perseverance as Samu Omorodion scored a brace to complete a dramatic comeback. And if was not for Harry Maguire's late heroics then Ten Hag would have had to leave Portugal with his job hanging by a thread.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to Opta, it was the 31st time that United conceded more than two goals in a match since the start of last season- which is the most by any Premier League team. Moreover, since Ten Hag took over in 2022, the Red Devils have conceded three or more goals on 24 occasions - which is also the most by an English top-flight team in all competitions.

  • WHAT KAREN CARNEY SAID

Former Lionesses star Karen Carney slammed Ten Hag's men at the TNT Sports studio during the half-time break, where she commented: "I messaged someone, they’re like a rich tea biscuit! They crumble. That goal they conceded, the first one, is concentration from Manchester United. They just switch off, they lose control. In the 18-yard box they’re not getting tight, they’re not picking up first and second balls.

"Okay, it comes back to Joao Mario… crosses from outside the box is a massive problem. You know that Samu Omorodion is massive. I’m highlighting [Matthijs] De Ligt here, he’s on the six-yard line, at no point to they squeeze. There’s so many things wrong with that clip."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

Ten Hag's future at Old Trafford has been under the scanner for some time and the performance against Porto will further put him under pressure. It was reported that the INEOS hierarchy might take a tough call if results remained elusive and the Dutch manager might face the axe if he fails to deliver against a high-flying Aston Villa in their next match away from home on Sunday.
