Will Man Utd get Newcastle's transfer secrets? Eddie Howe worried that Dan Ashworth will leak intelligence if he becomes sporting director at Old Trafford

With intricate knowledge of the club's strategies and transfer targets, Ashworth holds significant leverage at St. James' Park. But with his potential departure to a direct rival looming large, Howe remains apprehensive of Ashworth's continued involvement in the operations of the club and has urged for a swift resolution of the situation.

In response to inquiries about whether Ashworth is privy to Newcastle's summer plans, Howe told reporters: "Yes, and that’s why I say he’s in a position of power, with a lot of intelligence and information. That’s why it’s a slightly unusual situation. At some stage there has to be a line drawn and things have to move forward. It’s not my decision. I’m not in control of it.”

When further pressed about whether Ashworth will be present during the game against Bournemouth, he said: “That is not a question I can answer, it is for someone above me. I think your concerns are relevant. I share your feelings.”

Newcastle find themselves locked in a standoff with both Ashworth and United as they are reportedly demanding up to £10 million in compensation if an official approach is made. Despite the escalating tensions, it's surprising that Ashworth has not been placed on gardening leave, with some at the club advocating for this measure to be in place until after the summer transfer window concludes.

Ashworth has been working at Newcastle for 20 months and Howe believes that the club has enough resources at its disposal to continue excelling even if the Englishman leaves.

"Dan has had a relatively short period here. Football moves on very quickly and I say that regarding manager positions, too," he said. "We will work in an efficient way and we have capable people here in all departments and we will carry on smoothly. There has to be a succession plan for everyone, players managers you name the position. There is a strategy from the board above who since they came have run the club very well.”

The potential recruitment of Ashworth by United would mark another significant development at Old Trafford, following the appointment of Omar Berrada from Manchester City as the CEO. Sir Jim Ratcliffe remains determined to bring back the glory days at the Theatre of Dreams and getting Ashworth may be another step in that direction.
