  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    The Reds now enjoy an eleven-point lead at the top of the Premier League table after Arsenal went down against West Ham and the Merseyside club comfortably beat Manchester City 2-0 last weekend. They are on course to lift the top-division title for a record-equalling 20 times and if they eventually manage to achieve the feat, they will reportedly pocket a bonus of £2 million ($2.5m) from Nike, according to The Atheltic.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    As part of their five-year deal with Nike - which was signed in 2020 - the sports goods manufacturing company are obligated to pay out if the team win the Premier League. Nike will also pay another £2m if Liverpool reach the final of the Champions League and £4m if they win the European title in Munich on May 31. In the Champions League, the six-time winners are scheduled to face Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their round of 16 fixture in the French capital on March 5.

    Nike's contract with the Reds expires at the end of the 2024/25 campaign as from next season Liverpool will be donning Adidas kits. Last year, the Premier League side entered into a deal with the German firm which will see the club earn £60m a season, starting next summer.
