  • Van den Berg seeking a fresh challenge
  • No room at Anfield despite impressive pre-season
  • Several suitors across Europe want to sign him
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Van den Berg’s performances during Liverpool’s pre-season have caught the eye of many, leading to increased speculation about his future. Liverpool previously rejected offers from Bundesliga clubs Mainz and Wolfsburg. Mainz, in particular, had hoped to bring him back after a successful loan spell during the 2023-24 season, where Van den Berg played a pivotal role in their defence. Now, according to The Athletic,a £20m deal has been sealed for Van den Berg to leave Anfield, though the club who has struck the agreement have not been named.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Apart from the German clubs, Brentford are believed to be keen on Van den Berg alongside Burnley and Sheffield United. The Bees have been keeping tabs on Van den Berg for some time. The club have already developed a working relationship with Liverpool, having successfully negotiated the transfer of Fabio Carvalho to West London earlier this year.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Van den Berg’s journey with Liverpool began in 2019 when he signed from Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle. Initially seen as a prospect for the future, Van den Berg made four senior appearances for Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp. However, with the intense competition for places in Liverpool's defence, the Dutchman spent much of his time out on loan to gain valuable experience.
