Lewis Hall to Man Utd? Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle issues a crucial update on the Red Devils' transfer interest

Michael Carrick’s side are searching for defensive reinforcements following a dismal 2-0 defeat to Hull City on the opening weekend. The Red Devils have identified Hall as the ideal long-term successor to Luke Shaw, whose contract expires next year.

Despite Newcastle's insistence that the defender is not for sale, the 21-year-old is reportedly actively pushing for a switch to Old Trafford. The Magpies have formally rejected an initial approach, taking a rigid stance to prevent another high-profile departure from St James' Park.

Newcastle have already sanctioned the sales of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes for a combined £244 million. Unwilling to lose another key asset, they have informed United that Hall, who is contracted until 2029, will not be leaving Tyneside under any circumstances.

Following Newcastle's impressive 2-2 draw with Liverpool, new manager Jaissle was pressed on Hall's future. When United legend Peter Schmeichel asked if the full-back could head to Old Trafford, the German boss was emphatic.

"No chance! No chance!" Jaissle declared, quickly shutting down the prospect of a late summer sale.

However, the 38-year-old did acknowledge that Newcastle's transfer business is far from finished ahead of the September 3 deadline. Speaking to Sky Sports about potential arrivals, he noted that outgoings could still dictate their final moves.

"I would love to answer that with a clear number, but it’s depending also if players are leaving as well," Jaissle explained. "For sure, there will be adjustments made, the needs are clear. The management knows about the needs and we are all aligned. We will use the remaining time in the best possible way, but also we trust the players who are already here."

Newcastle have already heavily reinvested their transfer sales, splashing well over £150 million on new signings. However, their recruitment strategy has deliberately focused on securing young talent lacking previous Premier League experience. This youthful rebuild was on full display against Liverpool, as summer arrivals Amar Dedic, Sean Steur, and Lukas Hornicek all featured in the starting XI, while Aladji Bamba made his debut from the bench.

Despite the significant financial outlay, Jaissle confirmed the club are still searching for a select few additions to finalise the squad. The German boss praised his young side's weekend performance but admitted that a small number of targeted reinforcements are still required before the window closes.

"I hope so, today the lads were amazing, a young squad but we have some needs we know internally and we keep that internally," Jaissle said when pressed on upcoming business. "You can count them on one hand."

United now face a critical decision before the transfer window slams shut. Carrick must decide whether to test Newcastle's resolve with a significantly improved official bid or pivot to alternative targets.

With a demanding schedule ahead, including the return of Champions League football, United cannot afford to rely solely on Shaw to play every match. If a breakthrough for Hall proves impossible, the Red Devils will need to act swiftly to secure left-back cover elsewhere.
