  • WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

Journalist Mark Ogden drew a comparison with Federico Macheda's famous last-minute winner FOR United against Aston Villa in 2009, saying: "Mainoo doing a Macheda there, 15 years on from the original."

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker added: "Mainoo for Man Yoo! What a talent."

@TotalCristiano said: "Kobbie Mainoo, take a f*cking bow."

Internet celebrity @NikoOmilana added: "My first born son will be named after Kobbie Mainoo, the Liverpool killer."

@UtdFaithfuls added: "Mainoo, WOW. What a goal. You'd think he's got a controller in his leg."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mainoo had never scored at Old Trafford, with his two previous goals coming away from home against Wolves in the league and Newport County in the FA Cup. His strike came at an ideal time for the Red Devils, but their clash with Liverpool ended up finishing 2-2 as Mohamed Salah netted a late penalty.

    WHAT NEXT?

United play Bournemouth next weekend and Mainoo will hope to continue his fine form, especially with Euro 2024 looming. It remains to be seen if he will be able to force his way into the England squad but a goal like this won't harm his cause.
