Kobbie Mainoo reveals unique way he found out about England senior call-up as Gareth Southgate rewards Man Utd starlet for stunning form

At just 18 years old, Mainoo has emerged as one of United's standout performers this season, despite facing adversity early on due to a foot injury sustained during pre-season. Undeterred by this setback, Mainoo's resilience and exceptional talent have shone through, earning him a prominent role in his team's last 16 matches across various competitions.

His recent performance against Liverpool showcased his exceptional abilities, maturity and skill beyond his years. This display, coupled with his consistent excellence since breaking into United's starting lineup under manager Erik ten Hag, undoubtedly influenced Southgate's decision to fast-track Mainoo's ascent to the senior squad after initially selecting him for the U-21 setup.

Speaking to England's official X account, Mainoo admitted: "Yeah, it's a bit different! He told me to meet him in the reception and just told me I've been called up and I'm gonna be with the squad for the week. I don’t think it’s sunk in yet, but I'm excited."

Mainoo's call-up is a well-deserved recognition of his immense potential and remarkable talent. Despite the absence of any dropouts from the initial 25-man squad, Southgate decided to reward Mainoo's stellar form, affirming his status as one of England's most promising young talents.

It must be noted that Mainoo is also eligible to play international football for Ghana. However, he will hope to make his debut when England play Brazil on Saturday or against Belgium on Tuesday in two friendlies.
