  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Sancho has officially moved to Aston Villa in a deal which will see Unai Emery's side cover 80 per cent of the winger's salary, according to The Athletic. He spent last season on loan at Chelsea and now heads to the Midlands in a bid to revive his career. The deal reportedly does not include an option to buy next summer. They have also signed Elliott from Liverpool, on a loan deal with an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 25-year-old is entering the final year of his Manchester United contract, though the club holds an option to extend by 12 months. Aston Villa had to balance Financial Fair Play restrictions through the summer, making this structured loan move a favourable deal for the Villains. Sancho and Elliott joining the club adds further quality to Emery’s attack as they aim to improve what has been a horror start to the Premier League season.

  • TELL ME MORE...

Aston Villa had long been in discussions over Sancho, with talks running parallel to United’s interest in goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. His arrival gives Emery an extra wide option, capable of operating on either flank. Sancho struggled for form at Old Trafford but remains a player with a proven pedigree at the top level, while Elliott has yet to truly reach his potential.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SANCHO?

The 25-year-old will now link up with his new teammates as Villa prepare for the Premier League run-in and their European campaign. Emery will hope to get the best out of the winger after several frustrating seasons.
