'I put a lot of blame on myself' - Luke Shaw admits he felt like he 'let Erik ten Hag down' before sacking as luckless Man Utd defender reflects on 'always being injured'

Shaw has had to deal with so many injuries throughout his career that the Manchester United defender now claims that he blames himself for letting down manager Erik ten Hag before his sacking. The England international, who has won 34 caps but has not played for his country since the Euro 2024 final against Spain, played just 34 times under the Dutchman, with his final start under him coming in February of 2024 against Luton Town.

After the Luton game, Shaw did not play for Ten Hag again, as the head coach was sacked while he was on the treatment table. Under Ruben Amorim, he has made 12 appearances, and he also played in the Europa League final, although United lost to Tottenham. Now, he has revealed his frustrations with his constant battle with his own health.

As quoted by The Athletic, Shaw said: “I kind of felt like I let Erik down with the injuries and stuff. I wasn’t there for him towards the end, and that wasn’t nice.

“Then, when the new manager comes in and we speak about different things, different aims for the rest of the season that we had, obviously then again I get injured.

“A lot of last season, I just felt like I let a lot of people down, in the club and the team, because I was always injured. I might not have been but it was just something in my head where I found it really hard. I put a lot of blame on myself.

“The team and the manager were really good with me. Especially the manager, he stuck by me.”

United play Bournemouth in their next pre-season friendly on Wednesday as Shaw and his team-mates continue building their fitness ahead of the new season.
