Hansi Flick makes transfer request at Barcelona as he feels squad is lacking

According to SPORT, Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick believes that his team needs more defensive depth next season and has thus requested Deco, the Catalans' sporting director, to sign a versatile full-back who could play on either side of the defence.

Flick’s analysis of Xavi’s Barcelona highlighted defensive vulnerabilities on the flanks, which have been partially mitigated through offensive power and a high defensive line. Despite these efforts, deficiencies persist, especially in high-stakes matches.

Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde's constant involvement leaves the team vulnerable to injuries or suspensions. While La Masia graduates Hector Fort and Gerard Martin have been a constant in Flick's squad, they cannot be relied upon when push comes to shove, further emphasizing the need for depth in defense.

Flick's original request for a key attacking player and a right-back last summer fell through due to salary cap limitations. Although the Blaugrana nearly secured Spain U21 international Marc Pubill, the deal collapsed, and the club also missed out on Joao Cancelo, who had already spent last season on loan from Manchester City under Xavi.

As Barca plan for the next season, Deco is aware of the team's shortcomings. The primary goals are to secure an elite left-winger and strengthen the full-back positions. However, it's unclear if there will be room within the budget for these signings. The sporting department is currently evaluating alternatives, aiming to align with Flick’s vision before making any final decisions.
