Gareth Southgate's last dance? Laura Woods reveals signs that England manager will leave post after Euro 2024 final

Southgate took up the England manager post in 2016 and has led the Three Lions to back-to-back Euros finals and a World Cup semi-final. The former Middlesbrough boss was under pressure to keep his job earlier on this tournament following a lacklustre start to the competition, but now they are one game away from history. However, Woods feels Southgate will move on after Sunday's final against Spain.

She told BetMGM: "I think whatever happens in the final against Spain, Southgate will go. I’ve heard other managers talk about cycles before; having the sweet spot with a group of players only lasts so long and sometimes your cycle ends and you’ve taken a team as far as it can go.

"I think Gareth is at that point. His demeanour has been different this tournament. He is slightly sharper in his interviews, seems tired of it, and is referencing 'the noise' a lot more. He also spoke about his players being crippled by a fear of public embarrassment in the group stages – although we seem to have shaken that and I do think that belief is largely created by the manager.

"I am a really big fan of his and I don’t like to criticise because my memories of him have been incredible… and still are. I would love for him to get the send-off and the recognition he deserves and win us the Euros. His record with England is already impeccable – it deserves some silverware."

England's men's team are one game away from winning their first-ever Euros trophy and first major silverware since the 1966 World Cup. Southgate has done a superb job in his tenure but this would be the crowning achievement of all, should they defeat the Spaniards this weekend. His contract runs until the end of this year but reports suggest the Football Association want to extend his stay, regardless of Sunday's result.

Southgate's England side take on tournament favourites Spain at Olympiastadion in Berlin on Sunday night. It remains to be seen what decision Southgate will take over his Three Lions future.
