FIFA unveils 2027 Women's World Cup schedule as Brazil prepares for iconic Maracana final

FIFA unveiled the complete 64-game fixture list on August 20 at their Zurich headquarters. The tournament will span eight host cities across Brazil, ensuring widespread access to the competition. Each location is guaranteed to stage at least seven matches, alongside a minimum of one knockout tie.

The hosts will launch their campaign on June 24 at the world-famous Maracana. Brazil will then travel to Sao Paulo's Arena Itaquera on June 29 for their second group fixture, before concluding the opening phase at the Estadio Nacional in Brasilia on July 4.

The knockout brackets have also been defined. Brasilia, Porto Alegre, Recife and Salvador will host matches up to the last 16. Meanwhile, Belo Horizonte and Fortaleza will join Rio and Sao Paulo in staging the quarter-finals.

FIFA's Chief Women's Football Officer, Dame Sarai Bareman, emphasised the meticulous planning behind the itinerary. "As we developed the match schedule, we carefully balanced sporting fairness across all 32 teams," she explained. "Considering travel distances, recovery time between matches and the overall competition experience."

Bareman also highlighted the importance of nationwide inclusion. "We wanted to ensure fans across Brazil could be part of the excitement and that each Host City could play its role in this celebration of women’s football," she added. "We are especially excited that the tournament will begin at the iconic Estadio do Maracana, setting the stage for what promises to be an epic FIFA Women’s World Cup."

Former Brazil captain Aline Pellegrino, now the 2027 Executive Director of Legacy and Stakeholder Affairs, shared her emotional reaction to the announcement.

"The little girl Aline who used to play football in the streets of Sao Paulo could never have dreamed of a day like this," she said.

"Hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil is a source of immense pride. Next year, we will see people from across Brazil and around the world come together to celebrate women’s football in a country renowned for its love of the game.

"Each Host City will add its own unique flavour, making this a colourful, joyful and unforgettable celebration. The world’s best players will feel that energy from the stands, and they will give it back on the pitch through moments and performances that will inspire girls and boys around the world."

By staging the showpiece event, the Maracana enters an elite club of stadiums. It becomes only the third venue in history to host both a men's and women's World Cup final, joining Sweden's now-demolished Rasunda Stadium and the Rose Bowl in the United States.

With the host cities and dates now locked in, fans can begin mapping out their travel plans via FIFA's digital platforms. Sao Paulo will play a crucial role in the latter stages, staging a semi-final and the bronze medal match, before Rio hosts the ultimate showdown.

Attention now turns to the final tournament draw later this year. Once the 32 participating nations discover their group-stage fates, FIFA will release the definitive version of the match schedule, officially kick-starting the countdown to next summer's spectacle.
