  • WHAT HAPPENED?

United legend Solskjaer left his position as manager in November 2021, nearly three years after he was first appointed. The Norwegian led the Red Devils to a second-place finish in his final full season at the club, who have found the grass isn't always greener since his sacking.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

A lot has happened at Old Trafford since Solskjaer's exit. United went on to win two trophies under Erik ten Hag, who himself was sacked in October 2024. Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim replaced the Dutchman, but the club's misfortune has continued in the Premier League. In 2024-25, the Red Devils have lost 15 out of their 34 matches thus far and find themselves 15th in the table with 39 points.

  • WHAT OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER SAID

Speaking to BBC Sport, Solskjaer said: "Man United is my family and will always be part of me. In football, you don't feel sorry for anyone because we are privileged, absolutely 100% privileged to be able to work in clubs like this. But for me, it is hard to watch because it is your family that is struggling. It is never easy at the weekend when you look at the table."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?

Amorim's side, who are winless in their last five Premier League matches, will be back in action on Sunday as they take on Brentford in a difficult away fixture. Much of their attention will be on Thursday's Europa League semi-final second leg with Athletic Club, with United taking a 3-0 lead into the game at Old Trafford.
