  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Prior to England's Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland, widespread media reports claimed that the Three Lions would field a back-three formation, and that Bukayo Saka would potentially play at left wing-back. That did not end up being the case - England lined up fluidly but had Kieran Trippier at left-back, with Saka on the right wing - but Southgate has expressed his amazement at the leaks, as the Three Lions did often switch to a back five without possession.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In the end, England won the game on penalties - scoring all five in a shootout masterclass - and Southgate has expressed his bemusement that the tactical switch from a back four to a five was revealed three days before kick-off.

  • WHAT SOUTHGATE SAID

Southgate said: "We do a lot of things. As I said, we’ve won three out of four and a lot of our processes have been shared.

"Our tactical plan for the game was also shared three days before. We live in an amazing world where it’s so difficult for us because any element of surprise you might have with the opponent is gone three days before. It’s quite incredible really."
