Donny van de Beek completes Girona move for initial €500k after miserable spell at Man Utd

Van de Beek has moved to Girona for a fee of £500,000, a staggering loss for United, given that they paid an initial £35 million ($46m) to secure his signature from Ajax. However, reports have confirmed that bonuses could increase the figure to £8m ($10m), while United also retain a healthy sell-on clause.

Van de Beek joined United ahead of the 2020-21 season but he never managed to nail down a starting spot at Old Trafford. Apart from his first term, in which he played 19 Premier League games, the Dutchman was limited to single-figure league appearances each campaign. He leaves the club having played 62 times; just 23 of them were starts.

Van de Beek has signed a contract with Girona until 2028 and will hope to rediscover the spark that saw him play a key role in Ajax's run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. He has also won 19 caps for Netherlands, but was overlooked for their Euro 2024 squad.

Van de Beek will hope to carve out a niche for Girona in La Liga as they bid to build on an incredible 2023-24 season in which they finished third. Girona will also be playing in the Champions League.
