Denis Law: Gary Neville, Wayne Rooney and David de Gea lead tributes after Man Utd legend's death aged 84

The sad news broke on Friday night that legendary Manchester United and Scotland forward Law had died at 84. He was battling Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. Tributes have been pouring in across social media as clubs and players pay their respects to 'The Lawman'.

Neville led the tributes for the former Red Devil, posting on his Instagram story: "All my love."

Rooney also paid his respects to the football icon, writing on X: "Legend. Thoughts with all Denis’ family and friends ❤️."

De Gea, now at Fiorentina, replied to the news on Manchester United's official account, saying: "❤️🙏🏼."

Manchester City, where Law spent two years, also replied to their rivals' post, adding: "The whole of Manchester, including everyone at City, is mourning with you. Rest in peace, Denis. Our thoughts are with Denis’ family and friends at this difficult time."

The Scottish National Team page left fans reflecting on the legacy of one of their greatest ever players, posting: "A true great. We will not see his likes again. Denis Law. 1940-2025."

Liverpool's tribute read: "Sending condolences from all of us at LFC. Denis was a rival player but so highly thought of. As Bill Shankly once said, 'Denis Law could dance on eggshells.' Our thoughts are with Denis' family and friends at this very sad time."

While UEFA's official page listed some of Law's incredible achievements, adding: "On behalf of European football, we are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Denis Law. One of Scottish football’s true greats, he was a Ballon d’Or winner in 1964 before lifting the European Cup with Manchester United in 1968. Rest in peace, Denis."

Finally, the Premier League paid tribute, posting: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Man Utd and Scotland legend Denis Law He won multiple domestic honours, the European Cup and the Ballon d'Or across an incredible career Our thoughts are with Denis' family and friends at this difficult time."

Law's passing marks the end of an era at United. He was the last surviving member of United’s famed 'Holy Trinity', alongside George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who passed away in 2005 and 2023 respectively. Known as the 'King of the Stretford End', his 11-year spell at Old Trafford was full of goals, success and silverware. He will remain a favourite at the Theatre of Dreams for many decades to come.

Law was the only Scotsman to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or. He was handed the award in 1964 after scoring a club-record 46 goals in a single campaign as well as 11 strikes for Scotland.

Tributes will continue to pour in across the coming days and United will honour their hero at Old Trafford ahead of their game with Brighton on Sunday afternoon. Law's family have thanked those who cared for him in his final days and acknowledged how much he was loved by the fanbase and beyond.
