    WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester United announced on Wednesday evening that Fernandes had signed a new contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2027, with the option to extend for another year. The 27-year-old has been a key member of the Red Devils since his high-profile transfer from Sporting in 2020. Still, rumours this summer had claimed that Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Saudi Pro League teams were interested in the Portugal international with United reportedly willing to sell for the right price.

  • WHAT FERNANDES SAID

Speaking to ESPN Brasil, Fernandes said: "This vote of confidence from the club was very important for me. Even because I was approached [by other clubs], the club was aware that there was a possibility of me leaving, I had concrete offers. But the club showed that it needed me, that it was at a time of change and that they wanted to do things differently."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fernandes also backed Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag to lead the club to titles despite not having had a very successful tenure at Old Trafford. He said: "I believe there is a dream future at this club with the changes that are taking place.

"That's why I chose to stay. There were other directions that would have been interesting for me, other expectations. But I feel good here, I feel loved and I feel that the club has been very respectful of me."

  • WHAT NEXT FOR FERNANDES?

The Red Devils captain will now look to shift his focus to the start of the league season. United take on Fulham in their Premier League opener on Friday, August 16 at Old Trafford.
