  • WHAT HAPPENED?

In 2011, then-Liverpool striker Suarez was caught up in a racism scandal after allegations from Manchester United legend Evra surfaced. The Uruguayan was handed a £40,000 fine and banned for eight games by the Football Association (FA). Their tussle further heated up after Suarez refused to shake the French full-back's hand during the line-up as Liverpool and United faced off prompting Evra to celebrate in front of the striker during a win in the next season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Evra has long since retired and tried his hand at a number of gigs, including punditry, something that did not seem natural for the charismatic but erratic Frenchman. However, it seems he has found his second calling as he announced that he would be making his mixed martial arts debut with the PFL, and called out Suarez to face him in the ring. The former France international also said that he would allow Suarez to 'bite' him, as a call back to the three incidents the Inter Miami striker faced, with the last one taking place at the 2014 World Cup as he bit Italy's Giorgio Chiellini.

  • WHAT EVRA SAID

On the social media platform X, Evra wrote: "I’m officially training for my first fight with PFL Europe. They will pick my opponent... They asked who I wanna face. I said: Luis Suarez. I’ll pay out of pocket. He can even bite me."

    WHAT NEXT FOR EVRA?

In an official statement with PFL Europe, Evra announced he would be fighting in Paris as he said: “You guys should know by now, I love this game too. I’ve performed on the world’s biggest stages, won every major trophy in football, but PFL Europe Paris will be an incredibly special night for me. I’ve been training alongside the best in the world for years, and they’ll also tell you I’m ready for this. I’m going to put on a show at the Accor Arena on May 23, so come watch the spectacle.”

However, it is highly unlikely that Suarez will be donning the gloves across the ring from Evra considering the Uruguayan continues to play football with Inter Miami as he slowly winds down towards the end of his career.
