BBC staff 'unhappy' over Gary Lineker's criticism of Gareth Southgate during Euro 2024 after host labels England 'sh*t' on his The Rest is Football podcast

England came into Euro 2024 as one of the favourites to win the competition. However, despite reaching the final, their performances have not been very inspiring and former Three Lions star Lineker has been very vocal about Southgate's men and their showings in Berlin.

Speaking on his The Rest is Football podcast following England's 1-1 draw with Denmark in the group stage, Lineker said: “You can think of all sorts of words and expletives if you like, but it was sh*t.

"Was it tactically inept? They’re just a little bit lost tactically. And that comes from the manager, I’m afraid. It really does. He’s got to get England playing higher up the pitch, as a unit. Because at the moment they’re not a unit. Are they not coached to play that?"

As per the Telegraph, Lineker's overt criticism has not gone down well with staff at the BBC. Staff who deal with Southgate on a daily basis have been left "uncomfortable and embarrassed" by the furore sparked by Lineker. The report continues by claiming several members of BBC staff are unhappy that the 63-year-old does not have to comply with their impartiality guidelines.

The 63-year-old's current contract with the BBC expires next summer and it is still uncertain whether he will extend his contract with the prestigious British broadcaster.
