Arsenal set sights on Dan Ashworth after his shock early departure at Man Utd as Gunners seek to fill sporting director void left by Edu

Edu’s resignation, announced last month, sent shockwaves through Arsenal. Sources indicate that he has agreed to lead Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis' multi-club group, marking a significant career shift. Jason Ayto, Arsenal’s assistant technical director, has stepped up temporarily, supported by managing director Richard Garlick. The team is expected to oversee operations through the January transfer window.

According toESPN, Ashworth’s availability has piqued Arsenal’s interest. The 53-year-old recently parted ways with United after a brief five-month stint with reports suggesting that his departure stemmed from conflicts with senior figures at the club, tarnishing his tenure.

Notably, Ashworth has a prior working relationship with Garlick. The pair collaborated at West Bromwich Albion, where Ashworth served as technical director and Garlick was the club’s legal director-secretary. Garlick later succeeded Ashworth as sporting and technical director in 2013 when Ashworth left for the FA. Their past association is believed to be a significant factor in Arsenal’s interest in bringing Ashworth on board.

Garlick is spearheading the search for Edu’s successor, working closely with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, board member Tim Lewis, and co-chair Josh Kroenke.
