Arne Slot casts doubt on Trent Alexander-Arnold's England hopes as Liverpool full-back suffers worrying injury against Aston Villa

The English full-back had to leave the pitch with a suspected hamstring injury in the 22nd minute of Liverpool's Premier League clash against Aston Villa on Saturday. The star defender's absence for the majority of the game, however, did not harm the team as the Reds picked up a comfortable 2-0 win courtesy of goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah, and they extended their lead over Manchester City to five points at the top of the table.

After the match, head coach Slot provided an update on Alexander-Arnold's condition. He revealed that the club would conduct tests to find out the exact extent of the player's injury, but had serious doubts about whether he would be able to take the field for England in their upcoming Nations League fixtures.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, the Dutchman said, "With Trent, he had to go out. We have to wait and see how he is doing."

At his press conference, Slot added, "It’s difficult to say how serious it is but it’s always serious if a play goes out in the first half. Not because I didn’t like him (his performance) but because he asked for it himself.

"He didn’t ask for it because he was tired, he asked because he felt something. That’s not a good sign but it’s always difficult so close after the game to tell you exactly what it is. Let’s wait and see. I would be surprised if he plays for the England national team this week but hopefully he can."

While the 26-year-old could miss out on playing against Greece this Thursday, he will hope to get some game time for the Three Lions against the Republic of Ireland on November 17. Liverpool return to action on November 24 away at struggling Southampton.
