Antony opens up on 'difficult time' at Man Utd as Real Betis loanee drops hint on future plans

Despite a turbulent time at Manchester United, Antony holds no resentment towards the club or manager Erik ten Hag, who brought him to Old Trafford from Ajax in an £82m transfer.

"If they pay that kind of money for you, it’s because you have talent and quality," he said. "Wherever I go, I’ll always speak highly of United. I’m very grateful to the club and to Erik ten Hag for what we experienced together, for the titles, and for everything I’ve learned. I had difficult times there, but also very good ones. I think it prepared me to be here today, enjoying myself. My mind is here, and I’m very happy.”

Since arriving at Real Betis, Antony has not only rediscovered his form but has also felt a sense of belonging that he missed in England.

“I found myself, I needed to find myself and be happy," he added. "I needed my family to be happy too. Every day that goes by I see that it was the best decision I could have made. I’m enjoying the city, the club and everything. It reminds me a lot of Brazil because of the sun, the food, the people are also very happy. All of that is important for someone like me who is used to it.”

While Antony has been careful not to completely close the door on Manchester United, his words and performances suggest he may not see his future at Old Trafford. Reports from ABC de Sevilla indicate that Real Betis and Manchester United are set to meet soon to discuss the winger’s next move. The meeting will also involve Antony’s representatives, as all parties aim to reach a decision about his long-term future.

Antony has expressed his desire to stay at Betis, and the club is also keen to keep him beyond this season. However, challenges remain, particularly regarding finances. At present, Betis only covers a fraction of Antony’s salary, with United still footing the majority of the bill. Given that his contract with Manchester United runs until 2027, the Premier League club may prefer a permanent transfer rather than another loan deal.

One potential factor that could help Betis secure Antony’s stay is Champions League qualification.
