Another 'cupset': Detroit City knocks out reigning champions Houston Dynamo in Open Cup thriller

Detroit completed one of the US Open Cup's greatest comebacks on Tuesday night, coming from behind to beat Houston Dynamo. The hosts fell behind 2-0 after 40 minutes, but fought all the way back to send the game to extra-time, and then penalties - before winning a tense shootout 10-9.

Detroit's win follows a trend of recent "cupsets" - situations in which USL teams knock out their MLS counterparts. Pittsburgh Riverhounds eliminated two top-division teams last year, while Sacramento Republic made the cup final the year before.

Houston Dynamo head coach Ben Olsen played down the result: "It's a good punch in the face. But I think they'll respond. We have a good group in there and I think we have the right character to turn this into a positive."

It's the second time in the last four years that Detroit have beaten an MLS team. The Michigan-based team knocked out Columbus Crew with a 2-1 victory in 2022.

Detroit will await the draw to find out their next opponent. It will be the first Round of 16 appearance in club history.
