    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Catalans will have to reduce their wage bill and, according to La Liga president Javier Tebas, need to return to the 1:1 rule before they can sign primary target Nico Williams. With Joan Garcia already signed, the Spanish champions will have to offload players. In fact, sporting director Deco even claimed that the centre-back position is "overcrowded" and one of the five players in that position will have to depart this summer. Ronald Araujo and Christensen, as things stand, are being tipped for an exit.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Despite Barca's willingness to part ways with Christensen, the 29-year-old is absolutely not entertaining the idea of leaving the club before completing his contract, which expires at the end of the 2025-26 season. The Danish international is delighted with the love and support he keeps receiving from the Barcelona faithful, and intends to work his way into head coach Hansi Flick's plans next season. Barca, however, are wary of his poor injury record and would like to get his wages off the books and also recoup a decent transfer fee.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHRISTENSEN?

The centre-back received opportunities towards the end of the 2024-25 season upon fully recovering from his tendon injuries. Christensen underwent surgery as well as cellular regenerative therapy to rid himself of his persistent struggles with fitness. With the pre-season set to begin in around three weeks, the Lillerod-born defender will be eager to make a mark on Flick and earn a place in his plans for the upcoming season.
