Los Blancos to make it three wins from three

Juventus made an impressive start to the season, but their form has dipped in recent weeks. They head into this fixture without a win in six matches and having failed to score in their last two.

Their recent Champions League record also suggests they are no longer a serious force at this level. Juve’s last five campaigns have all ended before the quarter-final stage. They’ve won only one of their last 10 away fixtures in the competition.

That doesn’t bode well for the Italian team’s chances against a Real Madrid side that boasts a 91% win ratio this term in all competitions. Los Blancos have enjoyed at least 67% of the possession and created 2.0 xG or more in each of their last three fixtures.

Xabi Alonso’s side have been impressive in their Champions League encounters to date, registering 7.1 xG in total. That’s more than any other team that played twice.

At least two goals at the Bernabeu

Real Madrid have enough attacking threat to suggest they’ll score at least twice. However, they’ve been dependent on Mbappe for goals. Alonso reintroduced Jude Bellingham into the starting lineup against Getafe on Sunday, but he has still not found the net in six games this season.

The ex-Bayer Leverkusen boss still needs to figure out how to fit Bellingham, Mbappe and Vinicius Junior into the same team. The impressive form of Arda Guler, who averages a goal contribution every 93 minutes in all competitions, adds another dimension to that challenge.

While there have been 12 goals in Juve’s Champions League matches so far, their encounters have not been as open as that record suggests. There was an xG total of 3.4 in their 4-4 draw against Borussia Dortmund on Matchday 1. That match produced more expected goals than any of their other eight fixtures this season.

With the visitors unlikely to take too many risks at the Bernabeu, a goals range of between two and four looks probable.

Mbappe to strike again

The obvious candidate to score first in this match is Mbappe. The Frenchman has been in terrific form and netted the only goal in Real Madrid’s 1-0 win at Getafe at the weekend.

That marked the 26-year-old’s 11th consecutive game scoring for both club and country. He’s the focal point of this Madrid attack and has already netted five times in 171 minutes of Champions League football this term.

With Juve missing their key centre-back Bremer due to an injury, it’s hard to see the Italians keeping Mbappe quiet in this contest. The striker has scored first in each of his team’s two European matches so far. He has also done so in 44% of Real Madrid’s games in La Liga.
