After booking a playoff spot last season, Frank Lampard's Coventry City will be eyeing another top-six push as they kick off the new Championship campaign against Hull City.
Lampard took the reins midway through last season after Mark Robins' unexpected exit, and the Sky Blues quickly found their rhythm under the former Chelsea and Everton boss. With renewed belief and momentum, Coventry will be aiming to secure a playoff place for the third time in four seasons.
Their first test comes against a Hull City side that narrowly dodged relegation on the final day of last term. In a surprising twist, the Tigers opted to part ways with manager Rubén Selles and brought in Sergej Jakirovic from Turkish side Kayserispor — a move that's raised more questions than answers. Jakirovic will be under pressure from day one to steady the ship.
Given Coventry's strong home record and Hull’s preseason instability, this opener looks like a prime opportunity for Lampard’s side to hit the ground running.

Team news & squads
Coventry team news
Coventry City showed impressive resilience last season, bouncing back from a mid-season managerial shake-up that saw long-serving boss Mark Robins replaced by ex-Derby and Chelsea man Frank Lampard. Under Lampard's guidance, and with striker Haji Wright leading the charge, the Sky Blues punched their ticket to the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. It's been a relatively quiet but stable summer at the CBS Arena. Aside from the departure of Luis Binks to Brøndby, Coventry have kept their core intact.
In terms of fresh faces, Carl Rushworth has come in on loan from Brighton to take the gloves as No. 1, while Kaine Kesler-Hayden arrives from Aston Villa and Miguel Brau signs from Granada. Their pre-season form has been a mixed bag, with a heavy defeat to Monaco, a solid win over Bristol Rovers, and respectable draws against St. Pauli and Real Betis.
Hull team news
As for Hull City, the Tigers pulled off a great escape on the final day to retain their Championship status, but it still cost Rubén Sellés his job. In came Sergej Jakirović from Kayserispor, though his challenge quickly got tougher with the EFL slapping the club with a three-window transfer embargo.
That's limited their business to free agents, but they've moved quickly to patch things up. Defensive reinforcements arrived in Semi Ajayi, formerly of West Brom, and Akin Famewo from Sheffield Wednesday, replacing the outgoing Alfie Jones and Sean McLoughlin.
Up top, they've brought in Joel Ndala and Enis Destan after Joao Pedro's contract was torn up. Despite their off-field issues, Hull had a positive pre-season, picking up wins against Sunderland and Stockport, and holding La Liga side Getafe to a draw.
