Xabi Alonso beat Luis Enrique! Real Madrid coach's call 'very important' for Franco Mastantuono as new signing confirms PSG talks and explains why he picked La Liga giants

Mastantuono has revealed that a direct phone call from coach Xabi Alonso was a "very important" factor in his decision to join the Spanish champions. Speaking at his official unveiling, the 18-year-old Argentine confirmed he also held talks with PSG manager Luis Enrique but was ultimately swayed by the confidence shown in him by the Madrid boss. The former River Plate star described joining the club as a "dream" and a "unique" experience.

PSG were among the many clubs trying to sign the teenager, but Alonso's confidence ensured Madrid won the race.

He told reporters: "I had already spoken to Xabi, he called me, it was very important for me that he showed that confidence. It was private, but his call gave me a lot of confidence, it meant a lot. 

"Several people were interested in me, and I have the utmost respect for them. I spoke with Luis Enrique, and he was very clear with me. I congratulate him on winning the title last night."

Mastantuono's arrival continues Real Madrid's successful transfer strategy of recruiting elite young talent from South America, following the likes of Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo and Endrick. The attacking midfielder's move from River Plate to the Santiago Bernabeu follows the historic path of club legend Alfredo Di Stefano, a player Mastantuono acknowledged during his press conference. Securing his signature ahead of PSG underscores Madrid's significant influence in the global transfer market.

Despite signing for the great rivals of Lionel Messi's former club, Barcelona, Mastantuono did not hesitate when asked who he believes is the best player in the world. The new Real Madrid signing candidly stated: “For me it’s Messi. I’m Argentinian and he’s the best.”

Mastantuono will immediately integrate into the first-team squad and begin his adaptation to the higher tempo and tactical nature of La Liga. He has been assigned the number 30 shirt, which he previously wore at River Plate. While he expressed a preference for playing on the right, he has committed to playing in any position Xabi asks of him to help the team. His immediate focus will be on pre-season training ahead of a potential debut when the new league campaign begins.
