  • Pickford gifts Tielemans opener at Wembley
  • Fans take aim at Everton 'keeper
  • Stones also comes off injured in fresh blow
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Everton goalkeeper is usually renowned for his distribution but his passing ability was at fault 11 minutes into Tuesday's friendly clash. Pickford received the ball in his own box and attempted a skimmed pass upfield, which went straight to Amadou Onana. His Toffees team-mate laid it on for Tielemans, who stroked home from range as Pickford tried, in vain, to get back to cover his goal. After such a calamitous error, fans didn't hold back in their criticism of the England goalkeeper.

    WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

X user @livzledgee put simply "Pickford is a clown", while @Dobbo0107 agreed by saying: "Pickford that's genuinely f*cking awful, so so so bad". @Culturecams spotted a theme with the goalkeeper's clearances, writing: "Pickford often ignores simple options to be flashy or punt the ball into heaven."

Some fans, such as @MattJFootball, posed that Tuesday's mistake might be his worst-ever at international level. He wrote: "Pickford’s first big mistake for England…ever? Sure the reaction will be calm and measured…"

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It was an eventful first 45 minutes at Wembley Stadium. Shortly after Belgium's opener John Stones was forced off through injury, adding to Pep Guardiola's injury woes ahead of a crunch clash with Arsenal on Sunday. A few minutes later Ivan Toney scored his first England goal from the spot, before Jarrod Bowen thought he'd put his side in front moments later only for VAR to rule the effort out for offside. Tielemans then completed his brace following a Lewis Dunk error to make it 2-1 to the visitors.

    WHAT NEXT?

Toney's goal will give him a boost as he looks set to battle it out with Ollie Watkins for the Harry Kane back-up spot on England's Euro 2024 squad. Gareth Southgate, meanwhile, will be out to avoid another defeat having seen his side lose 1-0 to Brazil in Saturday's friendly.
