‘Second worst manager in the world!’ - USMNT fans joke about Gareth Southgate ‘upgrade’ after seeing Taylor Twellman float the idea of England boss replacing sacked Gregg Berhalter

On the back of a disappointing group stage exit at the 2024 Copa America, the United States have taken decisive action in their dugout. Berhalter, who previously oversaw a run to the 2022 World Cup, has seen his second spell at the helm brought to a close.

Speculation is rife regarding possible successors, with many hoping that former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp can be talked into cutting his brief coaching sabbatical short. Former USMNT star Twellman has even suggested that Southgate may be an option to take on an American “gig”.

Fans are not particularly taken with that proposal, with @HowUBenFeller responding to said suggestion with: “Southgate is the 2nd worst manager in the world... So it'd still be an upgrade”. Another supporter, @ArseneCoat_FC, said “stop it, we don’t want another boring manager”, while @MikeBowman3 added “don’t you even curse us like that”. @KyleGetSome said: “Please dear god no…. Southgate is nothing but berhalter with better talent. They are politicians. Not football managers.” @PSG_Seattle added: “I didn’t think there was a worst option but here it is.”

Southgate is not currently available, as he has guided England to the final of Euro 2024. His contract is due to expire at the end of the year, but there has been plenty of talk regarding a severing of ties with the Three Lions regardless of how a continental clash with Spain on Sunday plays out.
