Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney sent ‘ain’t going to get you out of the Champ’ warning amid questions of how big a stake new billionaire investors from the Allyn family own in Wrexham

The Red Dragons welcomed Hollywood co-owners into their boardroom back in 2021, as a stunning takeover in North Wales was completed. A meteoric rise across three-and-a-half years has seen the history books rewritten while clambering out of the National League and up into League One.

Every dramatic twist in that epic journey has been caught on camera for the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series. There has, however, always been acceptance at SToK Racecourse that further funding will be required in order to achieve the ultimate goal of reaching the Premier League.

Investment from those in the billionaire Allyn family has been secured, but there is little word on how much of a stake they now own in Wrexham and whether they will be asked to dig into the deepest of pockets alongside Reynolds and McElhenney.

Darragh MacAnthony – chairman of third tier rivals Peterborough – has told his 'The Hard Truth' podcast of why money will need to be found from somewhere when stepping up the EFL ladder: “Fair play to them. At the end of the day… look, they probably realise the Championship is at a different level to League One when they finally get there.

“We always said this, we always said that they’ll get to the Champ. The Champ is the test because you’ve got some big hitters, you’ve got some wealthy clubs there. Your seven and eight grand a week ain’t going to get you out of the Champ. Yes, Luton pulled off a miracle to do it, but it doesn’t always happen so maybe they’re just gearing up for that, preparing for that.

“They have to build a new stand, they’ve got a lot of things they’ve got to spend money on. It’s sensible, it’s a sensible move [getting the Allyn family on board] and the more good people you can put around you with money, the better.”

Wrexham are riding high in the League One table, as they occupy third spot after 14 games. There is the potential for more funds to be made available in the January transfer window, with Reynolds and McElhenney fully committed to making Phil Parkinson’s squad as competitive as possible.
