  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Van Nistelrooy returned to United in the summer, joining as an assistant coach under Erik ten Hag. Following Ten Hag’s sacking, he stepped into an interim role and his brief tenure was marked by an unbeaten record in four matches, including victories against Leicester City in two competitions and a crucial European win over PAOK. Despite his success, incoming United manager Ruben Amorim opted to overhaul the coaching staff, bringing in his own team from Sporting Lisbon. This left the Dutch without a position at Old Trafford.

Now seeking a new challenge, Van Nistelrooy has reportedly applied for the managerial vacancy at Coventry City, as perMirror. The Championship side, currently in 17th place, recently parted ways with Mark Robins and are seeking fresh leadership. They are said to be evaluating a wide pool of candidates, with approximately 70 applicants initially expressing interest. Among them are notable figures such as Frank Lampard and Lee Carsley, with the former reportedly already in talks with the management. Owner Doug King is consulting with performance director Dr. Claire-Marie Roberts and head of recruitment Dean Austin before finalising a name, who will face immediate pressure to turn results around.
