Messi registered five assists and even got on the score sheet as he showed he remains one of the best players in the world. Following the match, fans flocked to X to claim Messi is now on course for a record-extending ninth Ballon d'Or.

Following his dismantling of NY Red Bulls, Messi took all the plaudits. @TheEuropeanLad led the calls for Messi to win the Ballon d'Or, tweeting: "I’m sorry but Lionel Messi is still the best player in the world because what you are seeing here really isn’t normal. Unlike previous years, there is no clear standout nominee for the next Ballon d'Or. With serial winners Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo playing outside of the top leagues in the world they may have to rely on their international performances to stake their claim. Other potential winners - Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane - remain in contention for the Champions League and a strong European Championship for their respective nations may tip the award scales in their favour.
