Leah Williamson 'can't wait' to face ex-team-mate Vivianne Miedema when Arsenal open new WSL season against Man City as Lionesses star also reveals why she is 'relishing' friendly with Emma Hayes' USWNT

Miedema went from being Williamson's team-mate to her rival when she signed for Manchester City in the summer, bringing to an end a prolific spell at Arsenal. The two stars of the Women's Super League will go head-to-head on September 22 when the Gunners take on City in their season opener, and Williamson is looking forward to battling the Dutch forward.

Miedema became an Arsenal legend during her seven years at the club, scoring 80 goals in the WSL and becoming the competition's all-time leading goal-scorer. But, keen for a fresh challenge, she decided to sign for City upon the expiration of her contract. Williamson is now looking forward to going up against the striker, admitting she hopes Miedema receives a warm reception upon her return to the Emirates Stadium.

“I hope the fans give her the welcome that she deserves," Williamson told The Guardian. "I can’t wait. It’s going to be a very, very competitive match and why not start the season that way?"

Williamson has another big game to look forward to when England take on the USA women's national team at Wembley in November. The game will pit the Lionesses against a familiar face in former Chelsea coach Emma Hayes, fresh off the back of guiding the USWNT to Olympic gold in Paris, and Williamson is "relishing" the match.

"I think she’ll get a fantastic reception when she comes back, which adds a little bit of spice to a game," the England captain added. "They’re on fire. I'm relishing that game."

Arsenal Women are about to head off to the USA for their pre-season tour ahead of the 2024-25 season. Jonas Eidevall's side will take on Washington Spirit and Chelsea, before returning to England to finalise their preparations for the new campaign.
