Aubameyang & Mkhitaryan to the rescue! Dynamic duo can save Arsenal's season

The Gunners were in explosive form thanks to superb home debuts from their new signings and a midfield masterclass from Aaron Ramsey

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has a well-documented history of donning superhero masks and if the striker's thrilling debut against Everton on Saturday is anything to go by, the former Borussia Dortmund ace might just have arrived in the nick of time to rescue Arsenal's season alongside his old partner in crime, Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

For arguably the first time since arriving in England, Mkhitaryan looked like the player who lit up the Bundesliga during his time working in tandem with Aubameyang at Signal Iduna Park, with the Armenian setting up three goals during a 5-1 demolition job at the Emirates, making him the first Gunner to grab a hat-trick of assists in a Premier League game since Santi Cazorla’s four against Wigan in 2013.

A wave of optimism swept over the stadium before kick-off and it propelled Arsenal to a resounding victory, with the hosts hammering four goals past Jordan Pickford in the first half alone.

The electric attack which Arsenal now possess flows better without Alexis Sanchez at the helm. Mkhitaryan is more careful and precise with his distribution that the infamously erratic Chilean, while Mesut Ozil has the freedom to feed passes into two former BVB buddies, who wasted little time getting right back on the same wavelength.

Even Alex Iwobi impressed, producing a much more confident display in the four-pronged attack.

Hector Bellerin’s marauding runs down the right-hand side were equally impressive while Aaron Ramsey was excellence personified. The Welshman has become an integral figure in Arsenal’s midfield over the past 18 months but he was back to his very best against the overwhelmed Toffees, netting three times in total, and twice from Mkhitaryan passes.

Indeed, Mkhitaryan also put Aubameyang in for the Gabon international's first goal just before the break, meaning the Manchester United reject already has the same amount of assists as Sanchez had before his defection to Old Trafford.

Although a different type of player to Alexis, it’s clear that the 29-year-old fits perfectly into the current 4-2-3-1 system, and his partnership with Ramsey looks even more promising.

Ramsey has now been directly involved in 102 goals in all competitions for Arsenal (54 goals, 48 assists) and continues to show why it is crucial that the club tie him down to a new long-term contract.

The other, even more pressing issue for Arsenal is to get their top-four challenge back on track, given they are still five points off Chelsea and Liverpool, and that means addressing their dismal form on the road.

The Gunners have won just one of their eight away games against the clubs currently ranked outside the top nine and Wenger is acutely aware of the stark contrast between Arsenal's swashbuckling performances at home and their tame showings on their travels.

Therefore, it’s vital that there is now an immediate turnaround, starting with the upcoming north London derby clash at Wembley next week.

Arsenal now possess a strikeforce capable of beating any team in the country and while their top-four hopes may still be faint, anything now seems possible with their new dynamic duo, Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan.
