Los Angeles Dodgers team news

Shohei Ohtani leads the offensive charge, launching 43 home runs and driving in 79 runs, numbers that place him second in homers and 13th in RBI league-wide. He rides a 12-game hitting streak into the series, and over his last 10 games, he’s been scorching at a .432 clip with three doubles, a triple, five long balls, 11 walks, and six RBI.

Mookie Betts is hitting .244 with 17 doubles, a triple, and 12 homers, while also drawing 44 walks. Ranked 127th in homers and 77th in RBI this season, Betts is still finding ways to produce, entering Friday with hits in eight straight games and batting .333 with two doubles, a homer, and eight RBI in his last 10. Freddie Freeman remains steady at .303 with 29 doubles, a triple, 14 homers, and 45 walks, while Will Smith tops the club with a .312 batting average.

On the mound, the Dodgers will turn to future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw. The lefty is 6-2 with a 3.14 ERA in 14 starts this season, including five quality outings. In 71.2 innings, he’s allowed 71 hits and six home runs, issuing 19 walks while fanning 46.

San Diego Padres team news

For the Padres, Machado is once again leading the way at the plate, hitting .296 with 20 homers and 72 RBI, good for 41st and 20th in MLB, respectively. He’s riding a modest four-game hitting streak, though he’s cooled of late, batting .211 over his past five games. Fernando Tatis Jr. is hitting .266 with 21 doubles, two triples, 17 homers, and 69 walks, while Luis Arraez is at .289 with 23 doubles, four triples, and six long balls. Xander Bogaerts has chipped in with 27 doubles, 10 homers, and a .268 average.

San Diego recently leapfrogged Los Angeles in the standings for the first time this year and will look to widen that gap. They’ll hand the ball to Michael King, making his first start back from a lengthy stint on the injured list. King is 6-2 with a 3.61 ERA in 14 starts, matching Kershaw’s total with five quality outings on the season.
